The Joys and Secrets to Great Hiring
By: Margeaux Faig, Talent Acquisition Manager
Hi there! My name’s Margeaux and I’m the Talent Acquisition Manager here at Rebellion Energy Solutions. My role upkeeps many functions of HR, one of which is finding great talent. Want to learn how to hire great talent while keeping the process efficient and also…fun? Well, keep reading! 🙂
Know Your What
One of the first steps is knowing the role that you’re hiring for and building it out. Maybe you’re hiring for a backfill role so you’ve got all those nitty gritty details ironed out. Take a look again and connect with the team that the role sits on to ask what they’d like to see out of a new hire in this role. Ask questions such as: What worked well last time? What would enhance this role and drive even more impactful results? What would benefit from being changed? If it’s a new role, take the time with the team to understand what they need and do your market research on the role and its responsibilities. One of the secrets to finding great talent is to know what you and your company are offering to the job market.
Know Your Why
Candidates will want to know why you are hiring for this role and what they can bring to the table. That’s why building out a role to a tee is important. Candidates can bring their most authentic selves to the interview when they have a stellar job description to work with. It helps give them insight into where they match in expertise and the ways in which they can elevate their experience and make a positive impact.
Know Your Who
The biggest question I ask myself is what is the manager, team and organization looking for? My goal is to do right by the organization and the candidates in the hiring process. By spending time identifying what you are looking for in the role, you can identify the best places to advertise the role to bring in compatible candidates. Knowing your “must haves” and “nice to haves” is important. You may come across candidates who grab your attention but don’t check every single box. Reach out to have a conversation and see if it could be a mutual fit to continue connecting.
Know Your When
Timing is everything when it comes to hiring. There are so many details that make or break how smoothly a process can go, and you want to give yourself time to prepare. This encompasses getting a budget approved for the role, preparing the job description and discerning where to advertise and defining who is a part of the interview process and when you ideally would like someone to start. Think 90 days out. Sounds like a lot? Well, it’ll fly by! It takes time and patience to coordinate and collaborate with different team members.
Know Your How
How you approach hiring is one of the best parts of the experience. From collaborating with internal team members to making calls to candidates, it’s about interacting with folks in a way that keeps them engaged and excited to be a part of the process. Ensuring each candidate gets a warm, friendly and thoughtful experience, no matter the outcome, is of utmost importance to me. Even if the role doesn’t end up being a fit for them, I want them to walk away having had a good experience and knowing they can reach back out in the future.
At its core, the hiring process is about finding a mutually beneficial partnership, and there’s no reason that care, connection and consideration have to slip through the cracks during this time.
Give yourself time & space to create a process that everyone, including you, are excited to be a part of.
