Leading the Way: Rebellion’s Commitment to Methane Mitigation and Transparency

At Rebellion Energy Solutions, we are leading the charge in addressing methane emissions from orphan wells. A recent article from Grist.org highlighted our work in this emerging sector, underscoring our commitment to transparency and environmental responsibility.

The Challenge and Opportunity

Unplugged orphan wells—which can leak methane and other pollutants — present a significant environmental challenge. There are an estimated 120,000 known orphan wells in the United States and potentially eight times as many unknown wells. While recent federal funding has provided some relief, the voluntary carbon market serves as a crucial additional mechanism to finance these essential cleanup efforts.

Our Expert-Driven Approach

Rebellion’s team of petroleum engineers and field crews bring decades of expertise in health, safety, and environmental standards, reservoir dynamics, and well remediation. This deep knowledge informs our systematic approach to identifying and addressing wells with meaningful methane emissions — a critical factor in achieving emissions reductions in line with Core Carbon Principles.

Key aspects of our process include:

  • Data-Driven Selection: We prioritize wells with measurable emissions and stable pressure readings, critical for long-term emissions quantification.
  • Comprehensive Analysis: Our work involves analyzing field data, historical production records, and reservoir dynamics to identify and address wells with the highest potential impact.
  • Safety First: Our Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) specialists ensure the highest safety standards are upheld at every step.
  • Precision Measurement: Using advanced technology, we conduct accurate and extended baseline emission tests to support reliable carbon credits.

From more than 3,000 wells Rebellion surveyed, fewer than 1% met the stringent criteria for inclusion in our carbon projects – ensuring the integrity and impact of our work.

Addressing BeZero Carbon’s Assessment

The Grist article noted BeZero Carbon’s concerns about our Heartland 2 project. While our Heartland 1 pilot project was rated better than 93% of all BeZero-rated projects, Heartland 2 faced questions due to its larger credit volume. We see this as an opportunity to strengthen understanding in this evolving field.

We have submitted comprehensive methane data from our surveys to support BeZero’s formal re-evaluation of its Heartland 2 rating. This collaboration reflects our broader commitment to refining methodologies, reducing uncertainty, and enhancing market integrity. While some level of uncertainty will always exist in predicting methane emissions, our conservative and data-driven approach ensures the highest possible accountability and accuracy.

Leading in a Developing Market

As early adopters in the voluntary carbon market for orphan well remediation, we are dedicated to:

  • Transparency: Openly sharing methods and results.
  • Continuous Improvement: Innovating in operational practices and refining methodologies.
  • Collaboration: Partnering with stakeholders to achieve verifiable emissions reductions.
  • Environmental Responsibility: Mitigating methane emissions to promote a healthier planet.

A Cleaner Future

Rebellion Energy Solutions is proud to pioneer solutions for the environmental challenges posed by orphan wells. Through collaboration, rigorous analysis, and industry expertise, we are driving measurable progress in methane mitigation and carbon market integrity. Together, we can create a cleaner, more sustainable future.
