Leadership Matters!

by Josh Rinehart

What is leadership? It’s the ability to influence the attitudes and behaviors of those around you.

Great leaders can influence not only their coworkers, but also their friends and family, because the traits of an effective leader are universal. Let’s review some of these traits:

  • You are visible- it is easier to lead when you are physically present and approachable. Spend time with people and build relationships.
  • You listen- You give your undivided attention and don’t interrupt with counterarguments. Be respectful, open, and honest with your responses.
  • You are trusted- Trust comes from several core components:
    • Care– showing genuine concern or interest about those around you
    • Candor– honesty and sincerity; freedom from prejudice
    • Consistency– free from variation
    • Commitment– being bound emotionally or intellectually to a course of action
    • Character– the combined moral or ethical structure of a person; integrity

These leadership traits are critical in building and maintaining a positive HSE culture within a company. But it’s more than just that; these are noble qualities that we all want in a leader, regardless of setting. Leaders are ultimately judged by those whom they lead, therefore true leadership is earned, not given.

Accept the challenge.

Accept the responsibilities.

Make a difference.

Lead.
