Methane Abatement & Land Regeneration

Rebellion Energy - Land Restoration - Monarch 2 - 2023.jpg

We identify, measure, and plug orphaned oil and gas wells that would otherwise continue emitting methane into the atmosphere and local environments.

Once plugged, we work hand-in-hand with landowners and communities to regenerate native plants around our well sites, closing the loop on the oil and gas lifecycle.

Methane Abatement Carbon Credits

High-quality methane abatement credits from the permanent plugging of actively leaking orphan wells, independently verified and conservatively quantified under ACR standards.

Conservatively Quantified

Each well is directly measured prior to plugging using stabilized methane flow and pressure data. We apply layered conservatism including emitter-specific test times, terminal decline modeling, and certainty deductions to reduce over-crediting risk. Only credit volumes that can be classified as "High Certainty" are ever brought to market.

Surveying Equipment Use

Additional, Durable, Verified

Only wells documented as orphaned and actively leaking in their current state qualify under the ACR methodology. In short, these wells would continue leaking methane without our help. Independent third-party auditors verify each project before credits are issued on the ACR registry. Once plugged, methane emissions are abated and regularly monitored to ensure long-term integrity.

Community & Environmental Cobenefits

In addition to the immediate reduction of greenhouse gases, Rebellion's method further reduces environmental risk to nearby communities through restoration. Once plugged, the area surrounding the orphan wells is regenerated and restored with native plants, and we provide landowners with access to formal education on land regeneration. We are proud that our projects address legacy environmental burdens beyond simply plugging a well, including increasing biodiversity, soil health, and improvements to the water cycle.

Our Process

Step 1:

Identify & Measure

The first step of our process is to identify orphan wells that are emitting methane into the atmosphere. After identifying a potential well, we take baseline methane emission measurements, and take stock of the surrounding ecosystem in preparation for plugging and restoration.

Step 2:

Engineer & Plug

Once we understand the baseline emissions of a given well, our team of experts engineer the appropriate plugging solution. Once engineered, the orphan well is plugged and measurements are taken again.

Step 3:

Restore & Monitor

Once a well is plugged and we have ensured that we have eliminated any leaks, we work with the landowners to restore the native plant species to the effective area alongside our partner, Snaplands. We also monitor the well for the life of the credit to ensure no leakage occurs.

Going The Extra Mile

Rebellion's philosophy is simple: Do the right thing, do it completely. That's why after plugging a leaking methane well, we take the extra step ensure the land is regenerated with native plants. We rebel against the idea that our job is done once the well is plugged: Our job is done once the stewards of the land see it brought back to health. That's a job well done.
